Patient-centric Packaging in Pharma Business

Patient-centric Packaging
While it is important …but not given attention

In the era where patient centricity has gained paramount importance, it is surprising that packaging, which has a direct interface with patients, is not yet patient-centric.

The doctor-patient relationship primarily revolves around the patient’s trust in the doctor. Following a doctor’s consultation, patient’s trust extends to the medicines prescribed by the doctor.

Patients often have limited or no understanding of the prescribed medicines. The primary interface they have is with the medicine packaging and the medicine inside. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the perceptions patients develop based on their interaction with the product packaging, as this directly impacts medication adherence.

Here are several key considerations:

– Aesthetic Appeal and Positive Impact: Does the look and feel of the packaging create a positive impression in the patient’s mind? Medical packaging does not need to be fancy, but it should be aesthetically pleasing and foster a feel-good factor for the patient.

– Facilitating Medication Adherence:
Does the packaging facilitate adherence and compliance with the prescribed regimen? Effective medical packaging should clearly convey the dosage schedule, indicate if the medication should be taken before or after meals, and specify the duration of the therapy as recommended by the doctor.

– Influence on Doctor’s Image:
Does the packaging positively influence the doctor’s image in the patient’s mind? Patients often form opinions about their doctors based on the quality and clarity of the packaging of the prescribed medicines.

– Impact on Company’s Image:
Does the packaging positively impact the pharmaceutical company’s image in the patient’s mind? The perception of the pharma company can be significantly influenced by the quality of its packaging.

– Patient’s Social Confidence:
Does the packaging affect the patient’s social confidence while taking the medication? Patients, especially those who are working, are concerned about their social confidence when taking medicines. Packaging should be discreet and considerate of this concern.

These are some of the considerations which highlight the need for improvement in product packaging. Pharmaceutical companies should focus on these aspects rather than solely on the functionality and regulatory requirements of packaging.

Patient-centric packaging is a cornerstone of a patient-centric approach and should be prioritized to enhance patient experience and outcomes.
